Transitioning Lithgow from Coal

Acclimate Partners is proud to announce the successful delivery of the Lithgow Emerging Economy Project, in collaboration with the New South Wales Government and Lithgow City Council. This ambitious endeavor aimed to transform the Lithgow Local Government Area (LGA) into a thriving hub for renewable energy and advanced manufacturing while preserving its rich heritage as an industrial powerhouse.

Lithgow LGA, strategically located between Western Sydney and the Central West and Orana regions, holds immense potential to spearhead innovations in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. The area's natural endowments, coupled with existing energy distribution and transport infrastructure, make it an ideal location for new forms of energy production and green transport interchange.

Moreover, Lithgow's rich natural, historical, and Indigenous heritage offers exciting opportunities for growth in tourism. As regional economic prospects like the new airport in Western Sydney, inland rail, and the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone come to fruition, it is vital to ensure that the transition away from coal mining and coal-fired power generation is both planned and equitable, offering a just transition for workers and repurposing infrastructure and natural resources for future economic and community assets.

With EnergyAustralia's announcement of retiring coal-fired power generation at Mt Piper by 2040 and the expiration of consents on Centennial Coal's underground mines between 2036-2042, early planning and support for industry, workers, and the community become critical. The uncertainties surrounding the energy transition necessitate proactive efforts to diversify the local economy, create sustainable jobs, and provide opportunities for workers currently employed in the coal and energy sectors.

In partnership with the New South Wales and Australian Governments, Lithgow City Council is committed to fostering a positive investment environment that attracts new industries and supports existing businesses to expand. This collaborative approach will result in a range of diverse and skilled job opportunities, catering to the needs of young people and workers in the transitioning coal and energy sectors.

To ensure a successful transformation, the Lithgow Emerging Economy Project actively engages workers, the community, and other stakeholders. Their input, experiences, and perspectives are valuable in shaping future opportunities and ensuring that the transition is inclusive and beneficial for everyone involved.

The Lithgow Emerging Economy Project is not only focused on economic diversification but also emphasizes sustainability and environmental responsibility. By promoting renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, the project contributes to Australia's broader efforts to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Lithgow Emerging Economy Project represents a visionary initiative that stands to redefine the future of Lithgow LGA. By building on its industrial heritage and embracing innovation in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, Lithgow is poised to become a model for sustainable economic growth. Through partnership and active stakeholder engagement, this project lays the foundation for a just transition, supporting workers and communities while creating a brighter, greener, and more prosperous future for all.
